Christmas Season on Cozumel Island

Christmas in CozumelChristmas in Cozumel is a surreal time of year when the tropical palm trees sport twinkling colored lights and families celebrate the holiday on the beach. As part of a largely Catholic country, the Mexican residents put up brightly decorated crosses, pictures of Jesus and Mary, and adorn their homes with strands of Christmas lights. The municipal government adds to the bright displays with signs and lights down the length of the Melgar and throughout the Centro area. Church doors are thrown open during Christmas week to welcome in guests to hear traditional Catholic and Christian readings and to allow them to participate in the festivities. For tourists this is a wonderful time of year as well; cruise ships are docked at the port, restaurants and bars are open and local ex-pats plan special dinners to celebrate the season.
