Carnival Time in Cozumel

The Carnival is an eagerly-awaited annual event that metamorphosed from the Greek celebration of Dionysus and Catholic Lent. At its heart, the Carnival in Cozumel is a time to celebrate life and excess. During these festive days there are parades of intricate floats and costumed dancing Cozumeleños, stage shows with dancing and music, and a huge party along the downtown part of the Melgar. Local shops offer drinks, snacks and meals with chairs out on the pavement so that customers will not miss any of the shows, and every year a newly-appointed Royal Court takes a ride atop the parade floats decked in the most detailed and vibrant costumes.
